Visit Gallargues-le-Montueux

Gallargues-le-Montueux is a town in the Gard department (30660), set along the banks of the Vidourle river and at the edge of the hills overlooking the Petite Camargue plain. This is where Les Amandiers campsite is located, halfway between Nîmes and Montpellier.

The village is well worth a stop: Roman heritage, a stage on the Way of Saint James, bullfighting traditions, and leisure parks for families. It also serves as a practical base for exploring the beaches of the Gard and the Camargue.

Things to discover

Family visits

The Ambrussum site

The Ambrussum site is the first stop to plan. An archaeological site and museum with free access, it can be explored via a 1.4-mile landscaped path that tells the story of the ancient Gallo-Roman city. During school vacations, the site offers workshops for all ages: pottery, fire arts, mosaics, escape games, and game booklets.

Les Petits Fermiers

The Les Petits Fermiers animal park is another great family spot. This educational farm combines contact with animals and outdoor games: boat rides, pony rides, inflatable games, and a zip line. During the summer season, the park also opens its pool area with a paddling pool, slides, a water slide, and a shaded zone.

Optimum Loisirs

The Optimum Loisirs park offers 14 outdoor activities: paintball, with a kids’ option for ages 8 to 11, laser tag, human foosball, and a water slide. Plenty to keep you busy for an afternoon with friends or family.

Moulin de Carrière

For walkers, the Moulin de Carrière loop, a 5.3-mile trail starting from the town hall, winds through vineyards and scrubland. The GR653, on the Arles route to Compostela, also passes through the town. Other itineraries are among the most beautiful hikes in the Gard.

The monuments of Gallargues-le-Montueux

Saint-Martin Church

The Saint-Martin Church, built in the 13th century, has been rebuilt several times, notably in the 17th century after repeated destruction. The Historical Monuments association and the town carried out its restoration from 1999 to 2002.

Saint-Jacques Hospital

As you turn down a narrow street, notice the facade of a restored medieval house that is said to have housed the Saint-Jacques Hospital, as the village was a stop on the Way of Saint James. At the top of the town, the Royal tower served as a telegraph relay in the early 1800s. Listed as a Historical Monument as early as 1840, it was renovated in the late 1980s.

Saint-Ambroix Bridge

Don’t miss the Saint-Ambroix bridge, also listed in 1840. Built in the 1st century, it allowed the Vidourle to be crossed from the Via Domitia and was used until 1299. Today, only one arch remains of the original six.

Camargue Races

Finally, the village has an active festival committee, which organizes festivities related to the Camargue race throughout the year: bull runs in the streets and the Saint-Martin festival.

Discover the Gard from Gallargues-le-Montueux

The Gard coastline is 12 miles away. The seaside resort of Le Grau-du-Roi can be reached in about thirty minutes. The Espiguette lighthouse, still in operation, can be visited: 111 steps to the panorama. The beach of the same name offers 6 miles of sand and a dune system rare in Europe.

As for villages, Sommières is 7 miles away: a medieval town on the banks of the Vidourle, with its Roman bridge and castle. It can also be reached via the Vaunage greenway, a former railway line pleasant for both walking and cycling. Aigues-Mortes is also worth the detour for its towers and ramparts, the Notre-Dame des Sablons church, and its salt marshes.

To discover the Camargue differently, several manades (bull farms) offer guided tours by electric bike, quad, or horse-drawn carriage, with sightings of horses, bulls, and pink flamingos.
