Lunel is a town in Hérault (34400), in the Occitanie region, located between Nîmes and Montpellier, right on the border of the Gard. Les Amandiers campsite is located on the other side of the Vidourle river, in Gallargues-le-Montueux, just a few minutes from the center of Lunel.
This location makes the campsite a convenient base for visiting the town and exploring between the Mediterranean and the Languedoc hinterland, in a quiet, wooded setting.
The Pays de Lunel blends Roman heritage, medieval legacy, and Camargue landscapes. The Vidourle, which flows through the town, offers lovely areas for walking and cycling.
Several bridges dot the town and are true works of art. The Tibière bridge and the Ambroix bridge are particularly worth the detour, as are the Lunel and Marsillargues bridges.
Nicknamed the Hôtel Philippe le Bel, this imposing residence follows a typical medieval architectural plan. Its decoration and facade are inspired by the 13th century. Notable features include ogival windows, most of which have sculpted decorations.
One of the most popular spots in town, and a great place to find some cool shade on hot days. The park is named after Jean Hugo, a painter and great-grandson of Victor Hugo, who lived near Lunel. It features steles, statues, a memorial garden, plants dating back to the 19th century, a children’s playground, and a large fountain.
Opened in 2014 in an 18th-century building, the Médard Museum houses nearly 5,000 rare and precious books, as well as gilding tools and municipal archives. A must-visit for anyone interested in books and local history.
This historic monument features a bell tower resting on an old watchtower, which offers a beautiful view. Its facade was restored in 1984.
Beyond the town center, the surrounding area offers plenty to fill an entire stay. The Francis San Juan Arena is reminiscent of Roman arenas, and the Lou Pitchoun manade introduces Camargue traditions through its tours.
You can also head out to Sommières, the Vauvert wine estate, or toward Aigues-Mortes and Le Grau-du-Roi. Montpellier is only 22 kilometers away, and the Nîmes Arena is about thirty minutes from the campsite.
The Chemin des Capitelles is one of the most popular routes: 2.5 kilometers, very accessible, and ideal for families. To go further, cycle along the Vidourle or follow the Lunel canal down to the Camargue on a 20-kilometer mountain bike trail.
The Saint-Christol hillsides circuit and the Muscat castles circuit, covering 8 kilometers, showcase the AOP terroir and its wine estates. Other routes are among the most beautiful hikes in the Gard.
The Hérault Gorges are perfect for canoeing, with several routes and boats for up to 4 people. The minimum age is 6. Stand-up paddleboard and kayak rentals are also available. During the season, you can book your canoeing session directly at the campsite reception.
For fans of other activities, the region also offers golf, orienteering, and archery.
The Étang du Ponant is about fifteen kilometers away. Heading toward Le Grau-du-Roi, you will find the Boucanet and Point Zéro beaches, which offer many water sports.
