History of the building

An Augustan-era temple

The Maison Carrée was built at the very beginning of the 1st century AD, during the reign of Augustus. This temple was dedicated to Gaius and Lucius Caesar, the emperor’s grandsons. Its architecture follows the classic style of Roman temples, notably that of Apollo in Rome.

Limestone and columns

Entirely made of local limestone, it measures 26 meters long by 15 meters wide. Its facade is decorated with Corinthian columns and finely carved sculptures.

Several lives

The building has had several lives: originally a pagan temple, then a church, a stable, a museum, and a municipal archives room. These successive uses largely explain its preservation: the building was never abandoned or dismantled. Today, it stands on the esplanade in the city center.

Hours and screening

The monument welcomes visitors all year round, with hours that vary by season. The entrance fee includes access to an immersive screening shown inside the temple, which traces the history of Nîmes in Roman times: urban planning, shows, traditions, and the empire’s influence on the city.

The interior and the esplanade

The interior of the temple, which is intentionally minimalist, can also be visited. Outside, the esplanade and its shaded cafes invite you to take a break before heading off to other monuments.

Summer events

Every summer, cultural events bring the site and the historic center to life: concerts, sound and light shows, and reenactments. The Great Roman Games, held in the nearby arenas, attract thousands of visitors every year.
